The Pastoral System
Printer friendly

The pastoral structure at GIS is a horizontal one based on year groups. In the secondary school, each student is a member of a tutor group and generally remains with the same tutor for 5 years.  The students in each tutor group belong to the same house encouraging competitiveness between the houses.

Each year group has a Head of Year and an Assistant Head of Year and although in Year 7 the same two members of staff retain their position, the other Heads of Year and Assistants more with their students, thus getting to know them very well.

Our aim is that each and every student will be happy at school and achieve their academic potential. Many students have a Staff mentor or a Year 12 Prefect mentor to facilitate this and counselling is available for those who would like an additional level of support.

The Pastoral Team includes The Head of Prefects, The Head of Careers and the PSHE Coordinator as well as a representative from Learning Support and EAL. The team is led by one of the Deputy Heads and meets on a regular basis.

Camps

Every student is encouraged to attend the annual camp. Year 7 go to the Genting Highlands and the focus is on getting to know the year group and team building. Year 8 students go to Taiping and the camp’s theme is ecology with caving activities, visits to the mangrove forest, a charcoal factory, the zoo and the war cemetery.

Year 9 camp is perhaps the most challenging at OBS in Lumut, jungle trekking, kayaking and camping are just some of the activities.

Year 10 camp at Port Dickson looks to the future and students are focused on self-evaluation, study skills and interview skills.

Year 11 stay at school and prepare for their exams but have their Graduation Ball to look forward to!
