THE EPIPHANY DAY

January 6th. It was halcyon days and as it is said in these days, despite it is in the middle of the winter, the sun is always shining. The Christmas tree was standing behind the window and my brother was playing with his new toy that Santa Claus brought him. I had just woken up when my mother called me for breakfast.

            - I am coming, mum!

            - Hurry up, please. We are going to the port of Maronia to see the dropping of the Holy Cross with our friends!!!

            -Ok mum!

At 10 o’clock I’ve already put on my coat. Half an hour later we were at Maronia port where many people have gathered down, as the priest was preparing to speak.

-Today on 6th January we celebrate the Epiphany. At this day, thousands years ago Jesus had been baptized in a river. From then onwards, at this day, in many ports in the world a priest blesses the water. Some young men dive in the water to catch the Holy Cross, which a priest drops. The most of you all know that whoever will catch the Holy Cross he will be blessed from God.

When he finished, my brother said me that he had recognized a poor boy from his class, named John. This young boy would probably want the blessing by the Holy Cross and that’s why he was standing among the other young men. These men, the child and some local states were going to board in a boat to carry them in the middle of the port. As the boat arrived in the middle of the port, the priest dropped the Holy Cross into the water. The men dived all together, but unfortunately the boat started joggling and losing its balance. The people, who were on, fell into the water. So they all had to swim to get out of the water. All the people, who had watched the “accident”, were shocked but in the end relieved as the unlucky people got out from water.

Few minutes later, my brother shouted:

            - Look, John is holding the Holy Cross!

-That’s really nice, my mum said.

My brother ran towards the boy to congratulate him. John took a great pride in himself.

Since it was already time for lunch, we and our friends went to a local restaurant near the sea to eat. It was a great day with an unexpected happening, which I would never forget!!!!

This is a very involving story because it puts together a beautiful story with some information about a new culture that for me is new. In fact in Italy there is a different tradition: on epiphany day we celebrate the coming of "the three kings" to see baby Jesus. You know their story and their names? So I think that, this story can express very well the sentiment of the various protagonists.

Hi Dimitri, your story is very nice, but this story is real or fantastic? We don’t have this tradition in Italy, on the epiphany day an old woman called “befana”(epiphany), passes in the night with her broom and brings many cakes to the children. When I write my text on the Internet, I hope that you will read it.
