The Food Technology room at Garden International School was packed to its limits as 43 lucky students and 7 equally lucky teachers got to sample a variety of foods from five nations, as part of Cultural Kaleidoscope 2006, organized by Garden International School. Altogether, 43 students and 7 teachers took this magnificent opportunity to discover new cultures, with participants from Finland, Germany, Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia.
These five nations were represented in a splendour of colour and variety, with a selection of traditional delicacies from each nation. Marzipan chocolate, Pumpernickel (traditional German brown bread) and cheese were present at the German station, while Hapankorppu with Poronliha (reindeer meat on crispy bread), Salmiakki (liquorice-type candy) and Lakkahillo (a type of jam) were on offer at the Finnish station. From Indonesia were a selection of snacks served on special occasions, including Sumpia Udang (crispy crackers), Dodol (a type of candy) and Comring (dried shrimps). At the Philippines’ counter, a truly splendid feast was prepared, with Pulvoron (a sticky sweet), Pastillas de Leche (milky sweets), Yema (peanut-flavoured sweets), Bagoong (mango topped with fish sauce) and Dried Kamias (a local fruit). Back at the Malaysian station was authentic Rojak (Malaysian salad with sauce), fish Sate and sponge cake.
The students and teachers moved round the room in 5 groups, with one group occupying each station at any given time. They were given ample time to experience the exoticness of each food from every country, and answered a questionnaire. They described the experience as “truly unique and unforgettable”, as always, especially when you try something new!
