NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

We have now arrived at the end of the first term of 2006/07 academic year. I am pleased to see that many students, parents and staff members have thoroughly enjoyed themselves with the celebratory assemblies, drama showcases and musical concerts they had presented this term.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a good holiday and a Happy New Year, and to those of you who celebrate Christmas, a Merry Christmas. I look forward to seeing all students on Monday 8th January.

NEWS FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY

We have now reached the end of a very busy term.  It has been a term full of activities and events but also one in which all classes will have made real progress in covering the secondary school curriculum.

The highlight of this final week has been the school musical production, “Disco Inferno”. This is the first full scale musical that the school has produced in more than six years. I am sure that everyone who has seen it will have been captivated by the sheer joy and enthusiasm of all those who took part. What has particularly pleased me is that some 10% of secondary students have been involved in one way or another, many of them on stage but others behind the scenes. Many staff, both teachers and support staff have also been involved. It has been a real community effort.  Many thanks to all those who have worked so hard, especially to the leaders of the production team, Sara Lewis, Jo Lee and Lisa Shepperd.

A great debt of thanks is also owed to Iwan Owen and Alec Gregory who volunteered their time to help out and found themselves with a fulltime commitment for many weeks. The success of the production could not have been achieved without them. Many, many thanks.

Very best wishes for a well deserved holiday for all our staff and students and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone.

EYD Christmas Assemblies

Each Nursery and Reception class has treated us to a special Christmas performance. Mr Elliot helped play our favourite Christmas songs and the children enjoyed acting out the Christmas stories they have been investigating in class.

We were thrilled to have so many “mummies and daddies” in the audience – and even Santa popped in to see the Nursery show! Many thanks to the teachers and parents who helped with costumes and props.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Changes to FOBISSEA Selection

Primary FOBISSEA selection will now follow the same format as secondary. There will now be trials for individual teams e.g. U11 Dragons T-ball. The overall FOBISSEA team will then be selected by the coaches of the following teams:

Dragons U11 T-BALL Team

Dragons U11 Football Team

Dragons Primary Athletics Team

Dragons Primary Swimming Team

There will be separate trials for Year 4’s as these are not covered by Dragons Teams.

As the numbers for FOBISSEA teams are capped/limited then selection will favour those students who can offer more than one sport. It is important that this is taken into consideration when students select what teams they trial for.  This applies to Primary, U13 & U15 FOBISSEA teams.

Under 15’s Football tournament at Japanese International School

It was the ideal Saturday morning for a football tournament, the sun was shining, and few clouds were seen as the GIS Under 15’s football team, with our coach Mr. Ruck, stepped onto the bus heading to the Japanese International School of Kuala Lumpur (JSKL).

It was our first football tournament of the year (for some of us it was our first time playing at a football tournament for GIS) and after being disappointed with the cancellation of our Penang tournament earlier in the term, we all wanted to make this one worth while.

A total of 9 teams were competing for the trophy, with Alice Smith and JSKL being our main rivals. The tournament system divided the teams into 3 groups with the Alice Smith, JSKL and GIS teams all being separated. Our group consisted of two other schools Sayfol and Sri Cempaka.

After waiting about one and a half hours, we started off our first match against Sayfol. We started the game well with a few good chances; the most notable would have been a missed volley from Mark Choo. We dominated most of the first half with 90% of possession but couldn’t break the deadlock.

Most of our chances finishing with either shots off target or being cleared by the number 11 of the Sayfol team, whom we all agreed must have been at least 18. After the break, again we dominated the entire half but just couldn’t get our shots on target, Harry Smith having a few shots from outside the box narrowly missing the target.

At the last minute we were lucky not to have conceded a goal as Jack Perry our goalie produced a great save and one of the Sayfol strikers hit the bar.

At the final whistle, both teams were tied at 0-0. All of us were disappointed, as the result didn’t give justice to the way we played and dominated match.

However, this meant that in the next game against Sri Cempaka, we had to win 3-0 to qualify for the champions group as Sayfol had beaten them 3-1. Against Sri Cempaka, it didn’t take us long to score our first goal of the tournament. This came through a well hit shot by Jo Young Min (one of the first timers playing at a football tournament for GIS).

After the break, we went all out in attacking the Cempaka defence and were rewarded with a goal from Thibault   Caumont. We created numerous chances, more than enough to win the game by 10 goals; however, we were missing the       finishing touch.

Our frustration was excellently displayed as Justen Pang took down one of the Cempaka players and got a yellow card. The final whistle blew and the score was 2-0 to GIS. Unfortunately, we didn’t qualify to the champions group but instead went into the B group where the highest we could finish overall was 4th.

We were all extremely disappointed at this, as we played the best football in our group and were without a doubt better than Sayfol. But seeing as we couldn’t change anything, we accepted it and were told to play the remaining games as though they were training matches by Mr. Ruck.

Our remaining 2 games were against the Islamic International School and Taipei International School. Both these games were walkovers as we won 5-0 against the Islamic school and 3-0 the Taipei school. Thibault (3 goals), Nikaiza (3 goals), Justen Pang (1 goal) and David Tan (1 goal), being the scorers in these matches.

Overall we finished 4th in the tournament with JSKL, Alice Smith and Sayfol coming 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively.    Although we were disappointed at not being able to     compete for first second or third, we were glad not to have conceded a goal or loose a game throughout the tournament.

We played well as a team and dominated all of our matches. Thibault Caumont and Jo Young Min deserve honourable mention as they played exceptionally well in the tournament, both getting the highest ratings in the team. Thibault was also our top goal scorer with 4 goals.

FOBISSEA U13's Bangkok

It has been a couple of weeks since the U13 FOBISSEA team returned from Bangkok after participating in the FOBISSEA games. We are still to receive detailed results from the organisers but in the meantime here is a summary. The boys football team gained a fantastic silver and the swimming team came an overall 2nd in the swim medal tally.

A total of 10 medals were won by the athletics team, Anwar Jamal gaining 2 silvers, Daniel Napoletano and Michael Cantellon gained 2 medals each and Ai Ru came 3rd in the triple jump. The basketball teams found it tough, the girls finishing 7th and the boys 8th.

Overall, the trip ran very smoothly and I would like to thank Mrs. Moore, Mr. Storey, Miss Gunn, Mr. Moss and Mr. Ong for giving up their weekends to take the team. We now look forward to the U15 games in Bangkok

Dragons Team Selection

Trials will take place for Dragons Teams in the 1st / 2nd week of Term 2. It is important that students read the PE & Sports notice boards. Trials will take place at the same time as their slots published in the CCA booklet. Any queries regarding team selection must initially go through the team coach and then Mr. Wellington (Head of PE).

Dragons Trials - Term 2

Trials for teams will be disrupted at the start of next term as most of the PE department will be on an essential life-saving course. Please keep an eye on the newsletter and sports notice boards for latest trial announcements.

GIS SWIM CLUB

The above club which goes from Monday to Thursday 4pm to 5.30pm has been popular with students and parents alike. Sessions will again be starting in January and places are offered on a first come, first serve basis. The criteria for joining is, to be able to swim a minimum of 50metres with 3 strokes.

The cost is RM350 per term. Spaces are limited, so book early with Miss Devi in the school office to avoid disappointment.

ISAKL SWIMMING COMPETITION

Last week saw the ISAKL swim meet hosted by ISKL at their primary campus. A results summary is below. Overall the team did extremely well in a period of transition,            coming second in the final medal tally. I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Mr. Ong who has worked tirelessly in his new role as Head of Swimming. I would also like to thank Rob & Fiona Cope and Steve Ellis who assisted over a very long day.
