Council of
International Schools (CIS) Accreditation
As you may be aware, last week, the school
underwent a 5 Year review of its CIS Accreditation. The CIS visiting inspection
team spent three days at GIS re-affirming that the school continues to conform
to the exacting accreditation standards and assessing the improvements and
developments that have been made over the past five years.
Although
the final report will not be available for several weeks, the Team Leader
provided some verbal feedback at the end of the visit. The team’s overall
impression is that GIS is an excellent
school. They were highly
impressed with the improvements and development that had taken place over the
past 5 years. They praised the school management and leadership for having
vision and for ensuring that the school remained firmly on the path of
providing the best possible educational experiences and educational facilities
for students.
They
had great praise for the staff for their commitment to the students, their
dedication and their high level of professionalism. The team praised the level
of parental support for the school aims and the way in which parents engendered
community spirit. Team members were impressed by the dedication to providing
high quality education shown by the Board of Governors.
The
final report will not only contain such commendations but will also suggest a
number of recommendations for further improvement. Contents of the final report
will be shared with all sections of the school community.

Doing Our Bit for the
Children in Siem Reap,
A
fundamental orphanage fortunately caught the eye of Mrs Cheah whilst on her
visit to the renowned temple, Angkor Wat in Siem Reap
Upon
returning to school after the Easter break Mrs Cheah lost little time in trying
to rope in the Year 9s to help her with this magnanimous task. Fortunately for
us, her brother–in law had kindly agreed to deliver these items personally to
these children. This was most heart warming as now we were fully assured that
the goods were in safe hands and would reach the children safely
This left us only a few days to rummage
through our homes and gather all those items that we have in abundance but is
unfortunately non – existent in this Cambodian home. The Year 9s set about this
task with great zest and enthusiasm and returned the following day with large
paper bags filled with items that they lugged up all those stairs without a
murmur or complaint. This continued for three days and bags began to amass in
Mrs. Cheah’s office.
However, now, we were faced with another
problem of sorts, fitting in all these things into two duffel bags. Well we
did! The numerous pencils were squeezed into pencil cases along with crayons,
marker pens and colour pencils. This more or less
filled up one bag and the other was filled with notebooks and clothes. When we
finished both the bags were bursting at their seams! This left a fair amount of
notebooks and clothes still unpacked.
Finally we decided that we just had to
send every one of those items to those children. They needed
them
desperately! Thus we stuffed them into polythene bags to be hand carried,
though I did not envy the person who had to carry all this, but it was for a
cause well worth the effort. Such was the generous contribution from the warm
hearts of our very own Year 9s!
In addition to these, cash donations
were collected too. This was sent to them to purchase bulky items we could not
ferry there on the plane. It was great to see so many people pitching in to
help and this overwhelming contribution by the Year 9s only goes to prove the
caring and sharing nature of the GIS family and in a broader context, the
generosity and warmth of the Malaysians.
With such a resounding success, Mrs
Cheah hopes that we will continue to help these children out there in

The
French Department is proud to announce the winners of the French Book

Safety
of your Children / Going home Routines
The
safety of your child is very important to us. However, many class teachers
continue to have parents changing the home time routine without informing their
child’s teacher. If your child is expected to go home with someone different
then we ask that you add a note in the Student Diary highlight this.
Should
we not be aware of a change then we are obliged to call you and will only let
your child go with another adult with confirmation from you.
Thank
you for your understanding and cooperation with this important safety matter.
