FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Security
The security and safety of students, staff,
parents and visitors is of paramount importance. At the start of this school
Term, the school appointed a new Head of Security, to oversee all security
arrangements within and around the school campus. The school has a well drawn
up security plan and uses a number of expert external advisors. I would like to
remind parents of the following points that are strictly enforced by the
security guards:
1.
Do
not drop children off inside the entrance to the car park. This not only slows
down the traffic flow but causes many young children to have to walk through
the moving car park traffic. Please only drop your children at designated drop-off
point by the covered walkway.
2.
School
issued ID tags must be shown to enter the school grounds and worn prominently
once inside the school. The security guards may refuse entry to anyone not
wearing an ID tag.
3.
From
time to time our security guards may ask to search vehicles upon entry and exit
of the car park and search hand carried bags upon entry to the school grounds.
I would ask all parents to cooperate with our
security guards to help us ensure the safety of all campus users.
Mufti
Day
A very successful Mufti Day was held in school
today. Students, teachers and even some parents turned up to school and paid a
small fine for the privilege of wearing their pyjamas. A myriad of games stalls
and food stalls kept all participants entertained throughout the day. This
annual event raises money for needy children in

IGCSE Coursework
Coursework and projects which are assessed as part
of the IGCSE accreditation are subject to strict criteria imposed by the
examination board.
The work must be the student’s own unaided work.
All sources must be acknowledged. GIS teachers have been trained in the coursework
requirements and know exactly how much and when help can be given to students.
Please be aware that any additional help given by
private tutors, parents, older siblings or others may lead to disqualification
from the examination. Equally disqualification will result from “plagiarism” –
copying material from other students (past or present), websites or books. All sources of material must be fully
acknowledged.
Preparing For Examinations
1) Make revision “active” – don’t just sit or lie – with a book open in
front of you.
∞ Use mind maps (spider
diagrams)
∞ Tackle past questions
∞ Learn-write-check
∞ Annotate notes in your
exercise book or textbook (except English Literature)
2) Avoid
distractions when revision
∞ Quiet place
∞ No TV
∞ Peaceful - but not too
comfortable
∞ You
cannot revise effectively if you are too hungry, thirsty or sleepy!
3) Organise your revision
∞ Timetable - give each subject a fair allocation or time
∞ Follow a routine - focus revision on a specific time each day
∞ Spend some time on
concentrated revision by yourself and also some working with others (testing
each other, explaining concepts, etc.)
The Exams
It is the students’ responsibility to know where
and when each exam takes place and to be there on time. Extra time is not given
for late arrivals. Lateness of more than a few minutes can lead to
disqualification.
1) No handphones are allowed in the examination hall – leave them
at home.
2) Full school uniform.
3) Examination
leave only on the times determined by the school, full
attendance at all other times.
and finally…..GOOD
LUCK!

Careers
in Term One
Year 7
·
Introduced
to the variety of jobs to be found in modern society.
·
Talked
about the idea of new jobs that don’t exist.
Year 9
·
Worked
on software programmes to help them with the options
making process.
“The Careers software “Streets Ahead” actually
showed me which career I would be suitable for. Amazingly accurate!” - Satoko.
“I was surprised with the result but I decided to
believe it. I am trying to take steps towards my finishing line – getting a
job.” - Ha Hoon.
“The two software programmes
have helped me to understand my own
abilities and have given me ideas for my future. “Streets Ahead” is a good programme to help students discover information for themselves.” -

DISCOVERY WEEK
It’s here again. Lots of exciting places to visit, things to see during the week of
July 2nd - 6th (inclusive of weekends). By now, every one
in the secondary school would have received a Discovery Week Booklet and read
about all the wonderful trips available in Phase 1.
The
procedure has been simplified this time around. Phase 1 includes all overseas
trips and regional trips above RM2,500. So if any exotic place catches your
eye, now’s the time to sign up.
Not
wanting to venture far? Then Phase 2 might interest you. In January, more
excting trips this time under RM2,500 and closer to home will be available for
your perusal.
No
overnights for you? Then Phase 3 is just the thing. A limited choice of
self-improvement courses or some worthy Community Service Work. More about this Phase later in Term Two.
We hope
there will be something for every one! Teachers are now promoting their Phase 1
trips. See the trip leader for more detailed information on the trip you are
interested in. Look out for talks or presentations during lunch breaks. Please note that there will be no Bronze International Awards Trip
during Discovery Week.
Please be assured that for all planned trips,
arrangements meet with the school’s Health and Safety standards.
Remember, Discovery Week happens only once every two years! Hop on a trip and have a
whale of a time!
