NEWS FROM PRINCIPAL

This week, I had the pleasure of visiting the Year 6 camp in Port Dickson. I arrived for change over day to see the final activities of the group leaving and the first activities of the group arriving. Both groups had a great time, although the arriving group with a lot more energy than those departing. The camp programme for all year groups is a central part of our curriculum designed to meet many learning outcomes that we cannot address in the classroom. However, without the commitment of our teachers, these outstanding opportunities would not be available, and I speak from experience when I say that the teachers arrived back just as exhausted as the children!

Myanmar Cyclone Disaster Collection

14th  May, Wednesday  and 15th May, Thursday

As you are aware, the devastation experienced in Myanmar recently has put a vast number of people at great risk. We will be organizing a collection to support this group and liaising with the Red Cross to insure that our donation reaches those most in need. Any donations can be passed to Classroom Teachers in the Primary School and Form Tutors in the Secondary School on Wednesday and Thursday next week. Thank you for your support.

NEWS FROM SECONDARY

Koh Phi Phi Project

The team has been chosen, the concrete has been ordered and now we are set to go in June to help to construct the community centre in Baan Laem Tong. We have just sent off what we hope will be the first of many donations to the project co-ordinator and as a school, we managed to raise nearly RM14,000. This money was collected through your support during the “Change For Change” event and from donations from some very kind people. This translates into nearly 140,000 Baht and will go a long way to making the project a success. Ms. Purser and I would like to say a huge thank you to all of those who donated. One more thing to say, the most generous house during “Change for Change” was Sultan.

KL Pac -Youth Project

Early in the morning on Saturday 3rd May 08, Sian, Sofia, Nazzura and Cheng Yee along with Ms. Sheila and Mrs. Wilson arrived at KL Pac for the Climate Change Week Youth Workshop. It was an amazing and calming place with gorgeous architectural work. We were greeted with 11 other schools in KL and met many friendly people. At around 10am, we had a presentation from Jes Ebrahim, a wonderful inspirational 15 year old boy who talked about his experiences in environmental work around the world. He and his band sang songs that he produced , they were songs about the earth and global warming. We had a group session where all schools mixed together and we discussed the things we could do to make differences in Malaysia. It was a great way of sharing our thoughts and ideas. We also made a poster, warning people about the consequences of global warming. After presenting the posters, we had lunch at the cafe and we were then back to work. The four of us talked to Mrs. Wilson and Ms. Sheila about developing an outreach project to help improve our school. We were given a time frame to produce a documentary about the project. The school that provides the best results would win the YTL Green Ribbon Award. The 6 of us are very excited on starting our outreach project.

This Youth Workshop was a great experience for us all and made us feel very inspired to help stop global warming. We learnt lots of things that we could do to help. During these next few months, the Smart Rangers will be very busy trying to complete our outreach project. We hope all the students and teachers will support us in making G.I.S. a greater school.

Support GIS’ SMART Garden And Paper Collection

The Rangers' new project for the term is to help green open spaces in GIS Secondary by creating a garden for students to enjoy. To this end, we would like to request help from parents and teachers for donations of plant cuttings, pots, soil and garden ornaments which will go towards beautifying the courtyards. We plan to start on one space but if the response is good, we will extend it to others. All donations can be forwarded to the Secondary Office. We would also like to continue our newspaper collection project among the student and parents in GIS. If you have newspapers cluttering up your home, please bring your collection in and encourage students to do the same as the money will all go towards Reef Watch and the Turtle Sanctuary.

Thank you, parents, teachers and friends in advance for your help.

NEWS FROM PRIMARY

It was a great pleasure to see the eldest students in Primary (Year 6) heading off to Port Dickson for their residential camp. These camps are a fantastic opportunity for our students to develop a whole host of skills, including team building and to develop a better understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses. I am looking forward to making a flying visit to Eagle Ranch on Thursday to have a look at the camp in person. More news on that front next week .

Last week, we enjoyed seeing the Reception children begin swimming lessons in the school pool. Despite having taught swimming for many years to similar age children, I have to admit to being somewhat surprised at the confidence of the Reception classes. This week, our nursery children will be swimming too. We trust they will enjoy the experience and will be zipping along in the water in no time.

We have had a number of parents contacting the school about which class their child will be in for next year. We will not be finalising the classes until July and would respectfully ask parents to bear with us whilst this process takes place.

Best wishes for the week ahead.

Primary LRC Room to Read” Fundraiser

The recent visit to GIS by author/illustrator Yangsook Choi was a great success and she produced a number of charcoal sketches. We have decided to raffle off two of these fantastic drawings to raise money for the charity, Room to Read. Tickets will be on sale for RM2 each in the Primary LRC each day at break time and lunch time until 15th May and the draw will take place at the Primary assembly on 16th May in the Grand Hall.

If you would like to support us in this worthwhile endeavour, please send your child to buy tickets or pop in to the library yourself. If you would like to learn more about Room to Read, please visit their website http://www.roomtoread.org/
