NEWS FROM PRINCIPAL

This week, we had the pleasure of being visited by Mr. Richard Tangye, the Executive Officer of CIS our accreditation agency. He met with families, students and teachers during his day and left with a very positive impression of GIS and our school community.

I have had the great pleasure of viewing the production by our IGCSE Art students during the final exams. We can look forward to the end of year exhibition with great expectations. In addition to the wonderful secondary art, we have a group of primary art students who have contributed to an exhibition which opens this Sunday at a local art gallery. We would encourage you to visit and view the work. Further information is available through Ms. Linda Landers.

Next Tuesday, 22nd April, we are hosting Yangsook Choi, our second visiting author this year at a PTF coffee morning. I would encourage you all to attend.

NEWS FROM SECONDARY

Korean Professional Illustrator

On Tuesday, 22nd April at 1.15pm, Yangsook Choi, a professional illustrator from Korea who lives in New York, will be coming to GIS to talk about her work and her life as a professional illustrator. All students from Year 10 and above who are studying art & design will attend and get the opportunity to discuss working processes and what it is like working in the art world today.

SEASAC MUN

On 20th March 2008, 8 delegates and 2 directors headed to Bangkok, Thailand. Going to LCCT by bus was a long, tiring journey. No-one seemed nervous about the 1st SEASAC MUN conference while all the boys enjoyed playing Counter Strike on the plane. We finally arrived at Hotel Manhattan as scheduled. As Mr. Moore and Thomas knew places around that area, we decided where we should have dinner without any protest.

The 2nd day was an exciting day for all of us. Luckily, no one woke up late so we reached NIST (New International School of Thailand) on time. After signing up, we were directed to the theatre for the opening ceremony. We were given a warm welcome by the headmasters and we had the unique chance to listen to an inspiring speech by a representative from UNIFEM. We then realized that we were amongst the youngest delegates in the whole entire SEASAC MUN conference. After the speech, we joined our individual committees.

On the 3rd day, another guest speaker was called upon and spoke about trafficking of human beings. Then, all General Assembly delegates had a conference to discuss the approved resolutions of each committee. Unfortunately, none of these resolutions were passed by the GA. After the amusing conference, we went to the closing ceremony. We had superlatives as Ian Lai was selected as the smallest delegate but who can speak better than the big guys! Committee 1 was selected as committee where most of the discussion was out of topic. Committee 2 was selected as the quietest committee. There were many other fun superlatives.

We had fun during the conference but at the same time, we learnt a lot as well. Laughter and joy was included in the conference and we realized the importance of making friends from overseas. On the last day, the boys had a small party as it was the last night in Thailand. We hope that future conferences will be even better and as productive.
