Andrew Rankin, Teacher of Drama and English – GIS Spotlight | Blog

Andrew Rankin is one of the Apple Distinguished Educators and Large Scale Enquiry Project Leaders in GIS.

Tell us a less-known fact about you.
I have a twin sister yet we have different birthdays and star signs. I am a Taurus and she is a Gemini.

What is your happy space?
The Immersive Space I designed in Drama, it can transform into anywhere or anything with a push of a few buttons! The beach setting is a favourite.

Complete the sentence: I wish… my 2 sons could have met my mum.

What is your favourite activity/project at GIS?
This has to be the Large Scale Enquiry Project, it has been so challenging yet so rewarding to organise. The outcomes for the students, staff and the school have been incredible and I am immensely proud of our achievements.

How and why did you get into the teaching profession?
I was a trained actor and began delivering workshops in Theatres, Primary and Secondary Schools, Prisons and Young Offender Institutes. I discovered I loved teaching much, much more than acting and I worked very hard to get my PGCE.

What is the greatest thing of being a teacher?
Working with interesting colleagues and incredible young people who always challenge you to be better.

Describe GIS in three words.
Creative Innovative Passionate

What would be a good theme song for your life?
A Lovely Day by Bill Withers. My wife is my inspiration.
