Kuala Lumpur, 15 November 2017 – Garden International School (GIS) has been shortlisted for the British International School Awards 2018 in the Outstanding Strategic Initiative category.

The Outstanding Strategic Initiative award nomination is a recognition of the success of the GIS Professional Learning Culture in fostering an environment of reflective and collaborative learning across the school community.

BISA GIS logo for shortlisted schools 2018GIS aims to become a key hub for continuing professional learning in Southeast Asia. A lot of effort has gone into enhancing professional learning provision across the school. This has led to a more differentiated programme with the termly ‘Professional Learning Courses’ matching individual training needs. There has also been greater and more effective integration of technology into lessons, supported by the sharing of good practice and the up-skilling of teachers in the use of iPads and Google apps.

Professional Development at GIS improved considerably over recent years with the integration of the Professional Learning Afternoons; doubling the time dedicated to internal professional development.

“We are delighted to be shortlisted for this award. At GIS we are committed to the development of all our staff as we know this will have the greatest impact on our students’ learning. This award recognises the steps we have taken to create a meaningful and sustainable Professional Learning Culture for the whole school community,” said David James, Director of Professional Learning at GIS.

This increase places GIS up there with the ‘best performing schools’ in the world which according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have at least 100 hours of directed professional development time a year.

Our Professional Learning Afternoons provides a detailed programme of collaborative and independent professional development opportunities to achieve a shared goal which is to improve students’ outcome.

This Programme combines professional trust and autonomy by:

  • Developing world leading teachers
  • Developing climate of innovation and research-led development
  • High level of learning in all classrooms
  • Developing reflective practitioners
  • Professionally motivated teachers

Results will be announced during the Awards on Monday 22nd January 2018 at the Grand Connaught Rooms in Central London, UK.
