Steven King, Assistant Head of Primary School

What is your happy space?
At the moment, my happy space is a squash court- but it can be any area where I am competing. I enjoy getting into a space where the focus is singular especially when it involves some running around. It doesn’t feel like exercise at all.

What is your favourite activity/project at GIS?
That’s a tough question…there are so many to choose from. I love the camps as it challenges those who go, pushing many out of their comfort zone. I also love the sporting events like cross country which again pushes people out of their comfort zones. However, if I had to pick one, I would say the end of year production. The Lion King Junior Musical last year was absolutely stunning and showed how far the school goes to give students the opportunity to be part of something big.

How and why did you get into the teaching profession?
I enjoy helping people and liked the idea of how creative you could be in creating exciting, awe inspiring learning opportunities.

What is the greatest thing of being a teacher?
I love ‘catching’ students being good or doing something great, giving them the feedback and seeing them beam with pride. I also love watching children discover they can do something they didn’t think they could do.

Describe GIS in three words.
Progressive, exciting, world-class
