Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards, Edexcel and Examinations
Garden International School boasts some of the best academic results in South East Asia – this is because we aim to help all students to prepare for the challenges of university life and beyond. We recognise that the personal development of students is vital. For them to flourish we need to create the right kind of social and work environment so they are fully supported as they take on the challenges of learning and becoming young adults. By giving them the right tools and opportunity to be the best they can be, they achieved outstanding results.
Awards Ceremony Honours Student Achievers – Garden International School Students Score Top Grades in Cambridge International Examinations
Garden International School proudly hosted the annual Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards Ceremony this evening at their Mont Kiara campus. Celebrating some of the best performing learners in Malaysia and around the globe, Garden International School had nineteen (19) high achievers receiving awards in the June 2015 examination series. This made it particularly special as this was the first time the awards were held at the school.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries from the education sector. This included Malaysia‟s Deputy Minister of Education, Hon. Senator Chong Sin Woon, who was the keynote speaker at the event; Cambridge International Examinations‟ Regional Director of Southeast Asia and Pacific, Dr Ben Schmidt, and Cambridge International Examinations‟ (Malaysia) Senior Schools Development Manager, Mr Ng Kim Huat, who were there to represent Cambridge and congratulate the achievers.
Garden International School‟s Head Boy, Shaun Gan, also presented a speech on behalf of his fellow students. Cambridge programmes prepare students for life; helping them develop an informed curiosity and a lasting passion for learning. The Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards are issued by Cambridge International Examinations. Top performing learners received their Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards during this ceremony. These recognise exceptional learner achievements in the respective examinations around the world. The awards reflect the enormous talent in Malaysia, not only amongst learners but also within the teaching profession.
Garden International School has continually stood out through the quality of its education. With nineteen students receiving recognition during this ceremony, Garden International School continues to demonstrate their commitment to raising the bar on international education. Three (3) Garden International School students received „Top in World‟ standing – referring to the learners who have gained the highest standard mark in the world for a single subject. „Top in Country‟ refers to learners who have gained the highest standard mark in a particular country for a single subject – eight (8) Garden International School students distinguished themselves with this achievement. Eight (8) students from the school also received recognition for „High Achievement‟ – recognising outstanding achievement in subjects which are not so widely taken, and as such under the criteria, would not qualify for “Top in Country‟ Awards.
The Suite of Cambridge qualifications are separated into three (3) examination groups – Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge International AS Levels, and Cambridge International A Levels. Ten (10) students were able to impressively obtain the Cambridge IGCSE Qualification, which indicates that they managed to attain the first highest cumulative total standard marks over eight (8) subjects. Four (4) students received Cambridge International AS Level, as they attained the first highest cumulative total standard marks over four subjects. Three (3) students received the Best across award on Cambridge International A Levels, where they attained the highest cumulative total standard marks over three (3) subjects. ‟Determination, perseverance and diligence are skills that I‟m sure the students here are more than well acquainted with. These are the students who have put their words to action, and produced phenomenal results,‟‟ commented Shaun Gan, Head Boy of Garden International School.
Garden International School Acting Principal, Colter Watt added “we at Garden International School are delighted to host this prestigious event, to recognise the hard work by each student who undertakes these examinations, as well as to recognise the many hours of dedication that their teachers and support networks have given in helping them to achieve their goals”.
GIS Students Win Edexcel Medallion Award 2014
Five students from Garden International School Kuala Lumpur (GISKL) were awarded the Pearson Edexcel Outstanding Learner Awards among all the Edexcel students in Malaysia in recognition of their outstanding performance and proven track record in certain subjects.
Clarissa Wang Ting Yan obtained the Highest Mark in Malaysia for Design & Technology A-level; Clarence Koo Mui Han was awarded the Highest Mark in Malaysia for Physical Education GCSE; Edmund Kua Jingbin and Eugene Kua Jingwen both received the Highest Mark in Malaysia for Chinese A-level and Sabrina Brouwers acquired the Highest Mark in Malaysia for Art & Design GCSE.
“I’m extremely pleased and I feel that hard work does pay off,” said Clarissa who is currently studying interior design at Savannah College of Art and Design in Hong Kong.
Clarissa acknowledged that the subject requires a lot of research, planning and prioritising in order to excel and she is grateful that her GISKL teachers had given ample support and encouragement.
“Plan the time accordingly and work fast. Although that being said, there will always be late nights to meet deadlines, yet this could be a learning experience as it helps to show what it would be like in the real working world. As for the theory part, make notes and practise with lots of questions,” she advised.
Edexcel is a qualification brand from Pearson, the UK’s largest awarding body.
