John Preston, PTF Committee Lead
What is your happy space?
I suppose being around my children watching them grow and enjoying working through all their successes and challenges with them. My happy space would clearly be a BIG family hug.
How do you feel being part of GIS community?
Having been around GIS for the best part of 15 years, it has become a big part of my life. I have seen amazing students grow through primary to secondary and then through 6th Form. One of the things that I have noticed is that the school community manages students to get the best out of who they are. I spend a lot of my free time trying to give back to the GIS community for the great work they have done in developing my children. We have so many great communities within the overall GIS Family.
Seeing my son MC the Graduation dinner and taking his final role as Head Boy must be one of the proudest moments of my life. Zach was not the academic type he loved sport, however GIS saw great leadership qualities in him and took them to a level that amazed me.
Tell us about your passion/talent.
Ambition and capability at my age is the biggest challenge. My lifetime passion in my younger days were running and cycling. I represented Australia in the over 40s World Triathlon Championships in Canada and the UK and also a couple of times in the World Ironman Championships in Kona, Hawaii. I am very passionate about my career in the Relocation Industry being able to help people to move around the world and also to help them settle into life in Malaysia. However, my passion as a single father is spending as much time with my children as I can, I am motivated by their love and inspired by their achievements at GIS. I also enjoy the occasional round of golf too!!
Describe GIS in three words.
Generous – Inspirational – Supportive.
What would be the one advice you would give to any new GIS parent?
I suppose in reality we all go through challenges with our children and sometimes even understanding GIS. The one piece of advice I would like to give to new parents is that if you have challenges or questions of the school, speak to the right people. The teachers, support staff and leadership team are fantastic; they really do care about each and every one of us.
