Celebrating Community and Compassion at GIS
At the eagerly awaited annual Garden Party on November 25th, the Garden International School (GIS) family gathered at our Main Campus. Excitement filled the air as students, parents, and staff prepared for a day of festivities, games, and giving back to the community. The 2023 Garden Party celebrated unity and diversity while serving as a fundraising extravaganza, with all proceeds dedicated to supporting GIS community partners and our Service Learning program.
The Garden Party Spirit
The GIS community event showcased a diverse range of treats, including freshly baked sourdough, cakes, and thirst-quenching lemonade. The main foyer transformed into a vibrant market with upcycled toys and products crafted by the PTF upcycling team. Meanwhile, the sports field featured a lively bouncy castle and dunk tank, while the Garden Party Spirit in the sports hall brimmed with infectious energy, laughter, face painting, games, melodic music performances, and a surprise appearance by a giant Pokémon mascot.
Painting the Campus Pink
The theme for the Garden Party was all about “Painting the Campus Pink”. From students to teachers, parents to staff, everyone embraced shades of pink, turning the whole campus into a living canvas of unity. It wasn’t just about the visuals; it was a powerful statement of GIS’s commitment to embracing and celebrating our diverse and inclusive community.
A Week of Special Events
The week leading up to the Garden Party was filled with special events, each contributing to the overall success of the fundraiser.
- The Slumber Party for Dignity for Children Foundation: Kicked off the week with students donating RM5 to wear pyjamas to school and bringing an additional RM5 to buy popcorn at lunchtime.
- The Free Tree Society hosted a pot-painting activity during the lunch break, encouraging students to get creative for a good cause.
- The Garden Party Bake Sale: Offering delicious treats, where cash donations contributed to GIS Street Feeding, exemplifying the school’s commitment to broader learning experiences that extends beyond the classroom.
- A Run for a Cause for Make-A-Wish Malaysia: Participants joined the “Fun Run Fundraiser,” dedicated to Make-A-Wish Malaysia. With a RM6 entry fee (reduced to RM5 if they brought something pink), the event was open to parents, guardians, teachers, and students, with refreshments available for purchase.
A Record-Breaking Fundraising Achievement
A whopping RM 81,647.13 was collected at the end of the day, a testament to the incredible generosity of the GIS community during the Garden Party. The impressive fundraising success of GIS families reflects their deep commitment to actively supporting local charities, showcasing collective generosity and demonstrating a united dedication to making a meaningful difference in the community.
The GIS Garden Party Continues to Make a Difference
The GIS Garden Party has grown into an eagerly anticipated annual tradition, attracting participants not only for its festive ambience and entertaining activities but also for its pivotal role in championing charitable causes. Beyond the lively festivities, it serves as a testament to the GIS community’s unwavering commitment to creating positive impacts. As the day gracefully winds down, a lingering sense of achievement and unity envelops the atmosphere, transforming the GIS Garden Party 2023 into yet another treasured memory for all participants. It transcends mere event status; it has become a tradition embodying GIS’s spirit of generosity and community.
Reflecting the school’s belief that learning goes beyond classrooms, the Garden Party captures the essence of a broader curriculum. The diverse array of events leading up to and during the Garden Party, along with the impressive fundraising success, showcases GIS’s dedication to providing students with opportunities that extend beyond traditional academic boundaries. This mirrors the school’s ethos, where education encompasses not only what’s taught in classrooms but also an extensive ‘wider curriculum‘ through co-curricular activities, camps, trips, and programs in sports and arts.
