The Learning Conversations Day provides 15-minute holistic conversations between the parents, students and tutors.

This will allow development of meaningful skills-based targets which support personal growth both academically and personally to ensure students flourish.

Aims
Parent Student Teacher Conferences at GIS should provide meaningful opportunities for conversations in which there is honest, open and constructive dialogue about student progress and success.

What role should each person play in the Learning Conversations Day?The role of the teacher is to collaborate with parents and students on the holistic development of the student and provide practical strategies to support learning.

The role of the student is to actively engage in the conversation on his or her learning.

The role of the parent is to actively support the personal development of his or her child through engaging in the conversation and asking questions.

Before Learning Conversations Day

Review any relevant data: recent reports, your child’s homework diary, Google Classroom or SLG.
Focus on ongoing conversations with your child.
Make note of concerns or questions that you both have.

What questions should I be asking my child before a PTSC?

  • Do you think you are working on target in each of your subjects?
  • Which subjects do you really enjoy and why?
  • Are there any barriers to your learning?
  • What can we (parents) or teachers do to help this?
  • Do you feel that you have a good attitude towards your learning?

LEARNING CONVERSATIONS WORKSHOP PROGRAMME

In order to provide you with the opportunity to engage with the Secondary School as much as possible during the day, we will have an extensive workshop programme available to all parents in the school.

The workshops will fall into 3 categories:

Wellbeing
Wellbeing workshops such as Yoga and Art Therapy will allow both students and parents the opportunity to try a new skill, relax and build positive relationships with other members of the community.

Life at GIS
Workshops in this category will provide parents with key information needed for a positive experience here at GIS. Workshop in this area will focus on a range of topics such as Higher Education, Counselling, Assessment and the GIS Skills.

Our Curriculum
These workshops will provide parents with the opportunity to experience a lesson here at GIS and learn something new. All subjects will be on offer from experienced subject specialists.

Our workshops will last for forty five minutes and will run from 10am – 5pm on the day.

Workshops will be repeated to ensure all our parents have the opportunity to experience as many workshops as possible.

You do not have to sign up but it will be first-come first-served.

WELLBEING WORKSHOPS

Relaxation and Mindfulness
Mindfulness – What are the benefits of this? What short mindfulness exercise can you easily do yourself?  Come along, find out and try for yourself at this interactive workshop for both parents and students.

Art Therapy
Zentangle-Drawing based mindfulness for both parents and students.  A perfect, calming, revision break activity.  This workshop is suitable for all drawing abilities as is based on generating simple patterns.  Open to both students and parents.

Scratch Art Therapy
Scratch Art is a form of therapy that encourages creativity and self expression as vehicles to reduce stress, improve self-esteem, increase awareness and help remedy trauma.You do not have to be an artist to enjoy the benefits of art therapy. Open to both students and parents.

Yoga
An opportunity for you to relax, stretch and practice some mindfulness with a qualified yoga instructor. Please bring a yoga mat and water.  Open for both Students and Parents.

Why you should encourage your child to take a “Gap” Year?
Very few of our students take time off either for travel or work (or both) between school and university and all the evidence suggests they will achieve more, and have a good time, if they do.  Open to both parents and students.

Overcoming Procrastination
This workshop addresses procrastination and time management difficulties which affects a student’s study and life. There will be opportunity for the participants to explore what might be going on for them and what might be getting in the way of them doing the things they need to do, as well as to discuss some hints and tips for tackling the problem.  Open to students only.

LIFE AT GIS WORKSHOPS

Higher Education
In this workshop we will explore the various HE options worldwide and the application processes associated with each system. We will discuss how to make a competitive application and the skills/experiences required by different universities. Open to Students and Parents.

Counselling
In this workshop we’ll look at the role of mental health in day-to-day life of students at GIS and how the Counselling Department supports all manner of students. We’ll walk through example cases together to pull back the curtain on how the process goes. We’ll look at different strategies that are used to support different issues for students.  Open to Students and Parents.

Community Service and Discovery Week
This workshop will explore the variety of community service programmes that take place at GIS and introduce the charities that we are supporting as a school this year!  Open to  Students and Parents.

Student Leadership
What is Student Leadership @ GIS? What do we do to support & develop key skills required to be a student leader? We will present ‘a year in the life of a student leader’ as well as try out a few activities to find out where your strengths are. Open to Students and Parents.

Secondary Library
A chance to explore all of the fantastic resources (including online resources) that the library has to offer both students and their parents.  Open to Students and Parents.

GIS Mentoring Programme
How does the mentoring programme support learners and how can parents support their children with their studies, revision and wellbeing? Open to parents only.

International Award
In this workshop, you will find out more about the International Award programme offered to our students from Year 10 to Year 12. We will talk about the various skills taught on the course and about how important it is for our students to work in teams and connect with their natural environment. You will also learn about the various trips we run yearly and the progression from Bronze to Gold Award.  Open to Students and Parents.

Careers Advice
In this workshop you’ll learn more about the Careers Advice programme offered to our students in Years 7-12; you’ll have an opportunity to explore the various resources used and to consider the conversations you need to have with your child so that they can start thinking about and planning their future study and career paths. We’ll also have the opportunity to discuss the future of work and how you can best prepare your child for it.  Open to Students and Parents.

The GIS Learner Skills
During this workshop we explore the GIS Learner Skills and their importance within the GIS curriculum. It will be an interactive and “hands on” session and will increase your knowledge of the skills and offer insights into how to better inculcate these qualities and attributes into your child at home.  Open to Parents only

Inclusion
Come and joins us for a rotation of hands-on, mini workshops sharing ways of how to support and engage your child at home with their learning.  Open to Parents only.

SLG and IT Support
A drop in session for parents who would like advice and support on accessing information such as reports on SLG.  In addition, there will also be IT support there to help with any other technology related queries.  Open to Parents only.

The House System
How does the House system work @ GIS? You will hear an overview of ‘the House system’ as well as take part in a few house style competitions.  Open to Parents only.

Gap & EP (Extended Project)
This workshop will provide some insight into Global Awareness Projects and Extended Projects that students take in Years 10-12 at GIS. We will consider the merits of these courses for skills development and later life, and explore the various pathways they can take, from designing an artefact to writing a dissertation. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own project title and formulate objectives that would allow them to succeed.  Open to Students and Parents.

Helping Students with Maths at home
We will talk about the ways in which parents can help at home if students are stuck, even if Mathematics is not their strength.  Parents only.

An English Lesson at GIS
In this ‘lesson’, we will explore a poem together and then practise our language analysis skills, before writing an analytical paragraph together. We will talk about how you can support your child at home with their Secondary English studies, even if English isn’t your first language. You will also be welcome to ask questions about any aspect of our Key Stage 3 – 5 English programmes.  Parents only.

A Science Lesson at GIS
This will be a practical taster lesson in which parents can explore the practical skills students develop in Science during their time here at GIS,   Parents only.

The Humanities Project
In this lesson we will give an insight into the Year 7 and 8 Humanities Project. We will investigate the process that students go through and discuss the merits of following a thematic, enquiry based approach. Parents will try out a variety of activities from last year’s project.  Open to Students and Parents.

A History Lesson at GIS
Enjoy a typical skills-based learning experience in the History classroom at GIS. Engage with content from the IGCSE depth study, focusing on intolerance in the USA in the 1920s. During the session, the group will identify important links between different developments and then compare and contrast key social problems from that time with more recent global issues. Open to Students and Parents.

An Art Lesson at GIS
Exploring the fantastic Photography GIS resources. Learn the capabilities of our professional photography studio, industry standard Adobe software, digital SLR cameras through exciting practical experiences.  Open to Students and Parents.

A Music Lesson at GIS
This will be a practical workshop for students to engage in playing in  an ensemble, using various instruments.  Students only.

A DT Lesson at GIS
Parents can experience a live workshop masterclass for Year 11 Graphics & R.M. Students will be working on a variety of outcomes including C.A.D. drawings of their final outcomes, workshop tools, materials and equipment. Experience the depth of content, design and manufacture required for this challenging and important subject.  Open to Students and Parents.

A Drama lesson at GIS
A lesson in which parents will be able to learn how students learn in Drama. While doing a range of typical Drama activities parents will be given the opportunity to reflect on what styles of learning their children are doing as well as how Drama skills can be useful in other areas of the curriculum. Open to Students and Parents.

A Psychology  Lesson at GIS
Uncover what Psychology is as well as take part in a few psychological experiments. Open to Students and Parents.

A PE Lesson at GIS
Parents will experience a typical Physical Education practical lesson. We will develop the understanding of how PE teaches life long skills that are fundamental to a child’s health and wellbeing. We will also reflect on how knowledge and skills in PE can be useful in other areas of the curriculum. Open to Students and Parents.

A Business Faculty  Lesson at GIS
Enjoy a typical economics lesson at GIS…experience an engaging activity to illustrate an economic concept then explore the applications of the theory in the real world and how it might affect you. Open to Students and Parents.

A Mandarin lesson at GIS
Come and experience a fun Mandarin lesson and learn some basic Mandarin. For parents who don’t speak Mandarin.  

A Malay  lesson at GIS
Why do Malay? How is Malay taught at GIS? Parents will have a better insight of the importance and relevance of this subject. Parents only.

An EAL Lesson at GIS
In this hands-on workshop, parents will have the opportunity to experience the diverse nature of our KS3 EAL programme and will also have the option to explore the IGCSE ESL curriculum. Open to Students and Parents.

A Liberal Arts Enrichment Lesson at GIS
This lesson will help give parents a taste of what happens in Liberal Arts Enrichment lessons as well as a flavour of the ways in which some of our most able Year 12 students are prepared for some of the world’s top university courses. Open to Students and Parents in KS4 & 5.

Introduction

The GIS Sixth Form promotes academic excellence in all students, offering international AS and A Level qualifications. These are delivered by outstanding teachers with knowledge and expertise in Key Stage 5 education, who are always ready to go the extra mile to set their students on the path to success.

However, our philosophy of education goes far beyond that. We are proud of our bespoke Sixth Form Diploma which allows students to enrich their studies beyond the formal curriculum, develop leadership skills and nourish a love of learning. In Sixth Form, we recognise the need to equip our students with the soft skills that will prepare them for like beyond our school, and are proud of the opportunities our students have to do this as part of our THRIVE Programme, GIS electives and through our extensive CCA programme.

Underpinning everything we do is our approach of academic care. The Secondary School curriculum at GIS focuses on supporting young confident adults to reach their potential, in line with our GIS Learner Skills and our commitment to ensuring academic care for all.

Our Year 10 to 11 (KS4) curriculum is designed to meet the academic, personal and cultural needs of our students and better equip them for future challenges, while at the same time creating enjoyable learning environments that inspire and motivate. Students begin to select courses that appeal to them and follow a broad range of examined and non-examined subjects that prepare them for success both in and out of the classroom. Alongside examined subjects, students follow courses designed to develop them as individuals through Social Emotional Learning and a range of elective subjects. The Year 10 and 11 curriculum creates young adults not only with strong academic credentials but who are also well rounded individuals ready for the next stage of their learning.

Our KS4 taught curriculum provides students with a balanced yet bespoke programme of study at GIS. At its core is a personalised combination of International GCSE qualifications that all students undertake and enhanced by our elective program. To ensure students are well rounded with successes beyond just academic achievements, the programme offers all students in KS4 a range of bespoke GIS elective courses as well as the study of Social and Emotional Learning. This balanced robust curriculum ensures students are well prepared for our our outstanding GCE (A Level) programme in Key Stage 5 (Years 12-13) or study beyond GIS. As with all other Key stages academic care remains central to our ethos with regular curriculum time allocated to the pastoral system and supported through contact with tutor groups.

Our EYC learning environment, both inside and outside, is well-resourced and offers a wide range of multi-sensory learning opportunities that are linked to the UK Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum. We balance play-based learning with the teaching of fundamental literacy and numeracy skills, PE and music lessons, as well as social and emotional skill development.

Mandarin is taught as an additional language through a combination of discrete teacher-led sessions, and as part of continuous provision, with our outstanding teachers encouraging authentic and natural language acquisition amongst our youngest learners.

Throughout their time at EYC, our young learners have opportunities to follow their interests and take ownership over their learning. This is encouraged through first-hand experiences that create a sense of awe and wonder for children, inspiring them to learn more about the world around them.

Children’s brains develop connections faster in the first five years than at any other time in their lives. This is the time when the foundations for learning, health and behaviour throughout life are laid down. In fact, by the time they turn five 90% of their brain will have been developed.

Our curriculum and approach are designed to ensure that a strong foundation is laid down to support your child’s further development throughout their life.

Even at EYC, we offer a broad curriculum, with the aim of igniting passions and developing new interests amongst our children. We offer swimming, Water Play Days, Woodwork, Cooking, Trips and CCAs. We also offer our Jungle School programme. Unique to Malaysia, this is a hands-on programme based on the ‘Forest School’ approach in Europe. At Jungle School, our EYC children are able to learn about nature, explore and take risks is a safe and controlled environment and learn to become responsible citizens of the earth who respect and preserve her resources.

Introduction

This stage builds upon the foundations laid in the Early Years and Key Stage 1, preparing children for the next phase of their education. English is taught daily with a strong emphasis on the development of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. The development of practical, mental and applied mathematics is achieved through our mathematics lessons.

In Years 5 and 6, French and Spanish are added to the World Languages programme. Students can decide to continue learning the Asian language they have been learning or replace this choice with one of the European languages. Either way, they will still have the opportunity to learn the other language as part of the language club programme after school. Homework is provided throughout the school, and is aimed at consolidating skills taught at school and encouraging parents to play an active role in their children’s education.

Children’s progress is assessed throughout Key Stages 1 and 2 to ensure we have a good understanding of their ongoing progress, individual abilities and to ensure their future needs are met.

Introduction

The first key stage of school welcomes children from Early Years into the Primary School and encourages each child to continue their development and maintain the fun, active approach to learning. Information Communication Technology (ICT) is used to support the learning process. Classroom-based learning along with a broad co-curricular programme and education outside the classroom ensure we provide a holistic education for your child.

The majority of learning takes place in the nurturing environment of the classroom facilitated by the classroom teacher and assistant teachers. Specialist teachers support the teaching of Art, Music, ICT and Physical Education. In World Languages, students learn Mandarin or Bahasa Malaysia – the national language, helping them to develop the skills and passion to learn an additional language in depth. Students also have the opportunity to explore other languages as a part of the language club programme which happens after school. Science, History, Geography, Design Technology and Drama are taught through our exciting Topic Curriculum which is underpinned by the ‘Golden Threads’ of Intercultural Learning and Social and Emotional Learning.

GIS utilises both the classroom and education opportunities outside the classroom to provide a programme that develops World Changers.
