Student Leadership

Introduction

Widely recognised as an example of excellence across the region, the Student Leadership Programmes at GIS offer our young people the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and collaborate with peers to genuinely impact change in a specific area to benefit the broader school community.

Available for Year 3 to Year 12 students

Student Leadership at GIS

Approximately 200 Student Leaders from both Primary and Secondary have the opportunity to lead their peers and our community in ‘strands’ that inspire and motivate them. From environmental issues to student wellbeing, sporting and community focused-strands to those focused on digital technology, our students develop their leadership by taking ownership of a broad range of projects.

Whether they’re running charity events or interviewing new school leaders, introducing community recycling or coordinating musical performances, our GIS Student Leaders are empowered to genuinely make a difference. In fact, many of our most successful community initiatives — our annual Street Store and Refugee’s Christmas Party as just two examples— have been conceived, planned and led by our dedicated and inspiring student leaders.

Primary Student Leadership Opportunities

Our leadership opportunities start at a young age,  with students in Years 3 to 6 getting involved in programmes such as the Student Council, Green Dragons and Playground Leaders, to name but a few. In our Primary Student Council, students use their voices to represent their peers to ensure that the perspective of our student body is considered with regards all aspects of school life.

For students in Years 4 to 6, additional opportunities are available in areas such as Wellbeing, Digital Learning, Arts, Garden News, Canteen and Cool in the Room (supporting the social development of younger students). These programmes help our younger students develop important skills like empathy, communication, teamwork and problem solving.

Secondary Student Leadership Opportunities

Great leadership and teamwork is an important part of any environment, and what better place to start developing leadership skills than within school? A broad range of opportunities available ensure that our students can lead on change, whatever their interests.

From Sports to Digital, Community Service to Sustainability, our nine strands not only enable a great range of choice for our students in Years 7 to 10 and Year 12, but also allow them to gain experience in specific roles. All of these experiences ensure that they not only make positive, strategic change for our school community, but they are well prepared for the world beyond GIS!

Language Club At GIS

At GIS, we encourage our students to develop their ability to learn a language in a thorough and meaningful way. As the development of these language learning skills enables them to become confident linguists and gives them a greater capacity to learn other languages as they move through their education.

Therefore, in addition to the World Languages programme taught as part of the core curriculum, we also offer additional co-curricular sessions to help extend our student’s language learning and to help broaden their experience of different languages whilst at the same time exploring the culture associated with the language.

With a range of languages and cultural classes in a variety of languages (ie Bahasa, Mandarin, French, and Spanish) our Primary and Secondary can develop their understanding, fluency and appreciation for different languages and cultures.

Year 1 & 2

Key Stage 5 (age 16 to 18)

Introduction

The GIS Sixth Form promotes academic excellence in all students, offering international AS and A Level qualifications. These are delivered by outstanding teachers with knowledge and expertise in Key Stage 5 education, who are always ready to go the extra mile to set their students on the path to success.

However, our philosophy of education goes far beyond that. We are proud of our bespoke Sixth Form Diploma which allows students to enrich their studies beyond the formal curriculum, develop leadership skills and nourish a love of learning. In Sixth Form, we recognise the need to equip our students with the soft skills that will prepare them for like beyond our school, and are proud of the opportunities our students have to do this as part of our THRIVE Programme, GIS electives and through our extensive CCA programme.

Underpinning everything we do is our approach of academic care. As well as the care and support of their tutors team, our students complete lessons in Social and Emotional Learning to promote the wellbeing and understanding of others that helps support their success both during their time in GIS and beyond.

As a result of our track record of academic excellence, holistic approach and skills-based education, it is not surprising that GIS Sixth Form students are sought after by the world’s best universities.
