Our Student Leadership Programme is an integral part of the GIS community offering skills sessions for our students to develop their leadership skills in a wide range of areas as well as providing numerous opportunities for the student leaders to apply these skills throughout the year.
Throughout GIS, we have over 150 student leaders from Years 5 – 12 who are selected in Term 1 through a vigourous application process. Every student leader then goes on to be part of a “Strand”. We have ten Strands in total which cover many areas of the school from arts to sports, from pastoral to learning. In these strands, student leaders will work with one another across all year groups to drive change in their area.
So far this year, our student leaders have been involved in the following projects:
- Senior Leadership Interviews
- School tours for Open Day and visiting guests
- Mufti organisation
- The organisation and execution of the fun runs
- The redevelopment of the student leadership website
- The Street Store
- The redevelopment of the GIS Skills Ladders
- Battle of the Bands
- Leading technology drop in sessions for other students
- The Drop and Go recycling project
- Development of student observations
- New student integration in school
- Mentoring of students
- Student Voice
- The Positive Education chalk board
This is what they have to say ….
As staff, we really value the effort the Student Leaders put into their day to day interactions in order to be positive roles for other members of the school. However, our students also value the programme too. Here are a few of their thoughts on Student Leadership at GIS.
“Student Leadership at GIS is absolutely brilliant in regards to getting a great glimpse of working in the wider world because we are exposed to so many opportunities to not only learn new skills (like interpersonal communication) but to constantly put them to practice in such an accessible way.” Lana Ng, Year 10
“Student Leadership at GIS gives people a chance to help our community and also participate in school events. It gives all student in secondary a chance to be a role model for everyone in school and it also gives new students a chance to have a person who can help them and guide them. The student leaders learn a lot about responsibility and being independent.” Kaitlyn Chua, Year 8
“Being a student leader at GIS is an opportunity for us to work as a team and take a lead to help others. You become a part of all the amazing events the school celebrates and you finally have your chance to speak out your ideas. You can show off your talents and learn teamwork skills that you may have never learnt before.” Janhavi Purkar, Year 8
“Being a student leader at GIS is being committed towards aiding the community. It’s about being responsible and giving time to create a better student environment for everyone. Every role plays its own part in the creation and organisation of amazing events such as Mufti day, Happy Week and more. Most importantly it’s about having a say in what happens and making GIS the best it can be.” Ryan Lee, Year 9
“Student Leadership at GIS is inspiring because it pushes students out of their comfort zones and strive to be better leaders in their respective fields. Through collaborating with fellow student leaders and brainstorming game changing ideas, it has definitely been one of my best experience so far at GIS.” Jia Yi Lim, Year 12
As you can see, our student leaders play a vital role in the GIS community and this is only a snapshot of the events they get involved with.
