At Garden International School (GIS), we believe in the transformative power of education beyond the classroom. Care Week, which is one of the key components of our Service Learning curriculum, is a great example. It is a dedicated time for our secondary students to engage deeply with the world around them and make a positive impact in their communities and the environment.
The Essence of Care Week
Through various projects and activities, students from Years 7, 8, 9, and 10 are given the opportunity to work with less-privileged groups in society and contribute to environmental conservation efforts. Care Week is designed with these outcomes in mind:
- Foster awareness to ensure students understand how they can affect a positive change in the world
- Provide a range of opportunities for students to engage in meaningful service, including supporting vulnerable groups and conserving the environment
- Encourage students to grow personally as they support others and improve the world, in line with the Care Movement.
- Develop aspects of global citizenship and positive student agency
Building Connections and Skills
During Care Week, students apply not only their academic learning to real-world needs but also build important relationships and social connections with their peers, adults, and the communities they are helping. This experience is instrumental in developing their communication and critical thinking skills, as they navigate diverse challenges and collaborate on impactful projects.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Care Week provides a unique opportunity for our students to step out of their usual environment and encounter life beyond GIS. They come face-to-face with global issues and work together to provide meaningful and heartfelt community service. From local projects to those farther afield, our students engage in a wide variety of activities that broaden their perspectives and deepen their understanding of different life experiences.
Locally, activities have ranged from working with primary and refugee students, participating in conservation projects such as rainforest conservation and recycling initiatives, and undertaking painting and renovation within the local community. Our partners have included local and refugee schools, the Orang Asli, and animal shelters in the KL area.
Why Care Week Matters
Care Week is an integral part of the GIS academic year, underscoring our commitment to nurturing awareness, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship in our students. By engaging in these diverse and impactful activities, our students not only contribute to their communities but also grow as compassionate, informed, and proactive individuals ready to make a difference in the world.
Care Week at GIS is an inspiring journey where students realise the personal joy and fulfilment of contributing to the broader Malaysian community.
