Following our recent shortlist in the 2019 international Relocate Awards as a School Offering Outstanding Relocation Support, we are delighted to share the news, that we have been given the accolade “Highly Commended” as a finalist runner-up at the prestigious awards. This is the second year in a row we have received a such high recognition in this category.
Our commitment to ensuring families’ and students have smooth transitions, both when joining and leaving our GIS school community, impressed the Relocate Global judging panel – so we wanted to share our hard work with you, too!
So what does our relocation support ‘look like’? Well, for new families, our wonderful PTF works incredibly hard to help new families settle into GIS life seamlessly and adjust to living in Malaysia. Their designated ‘Newcomers Team’ host new parent coffee mornings and organise a popular family ‘buddy’ system – all which help our new families to quickly build connections and friendships. Their KL orientation trips help families to learn about what Kuala Lumpur is like and how to navigate family life here! And our weekly parent workshops – which cover a huge range of topics – also help our new families to feel quickly connected to the GIS learning community.
For those families leaving GIS, our dedicated team of full-time counsellors work closely with teachers and school leaders to ensure that every child has had the chance to say ‘good goodbyes’ and feels prepared for the next chapter in their journey. Special leavers’ assemblies, personalised ‘leavers’ kits’ and on-hand counselling support all help make a difference, too.
But it wasn’t just our work for new and leaving families that impressed the panel. We have another large group of students who deserve our support, as many of them are preparing to relocate and face big transitions in the next chapters of their lives: our Sixth Formers.
In recent years, we have worked really hard to ensure that our Sixth Form students have every opportunity to shine when they graduate from GIS. For example, we are the only international school in Malaysia to offer real-world summer internships; these to help prepare our students for ‘life beyond GIS’ and offer unparalleled insights into the ‘world of work’. In addition, our personalised and bespoke enrichment programme – launching in August this year – helps to supplement our Sixth Formers’ A Level studies and prepare them for undergraduate studies in a huge range of fields. Our comprehensive university mentoring also helps our students to feel emotionally and academically prepared for their post-Secondary studies.
And then there’s our Alumni! Whenever they leave GIS, all of our GIS students, teachers and parents are encouraged to join GIS Alumni and stay connected to fellow Alumni in other universities, industries and countries all over the world. Our widely-placed and highly engaged Alumni network provides a familiar point of reference and connection for our families to call upon, wherever they are in their personal or educational journeys. As a school, we deeply commit to maintaining our alumni network through social media, our digital Alumni platform & regular alumni social and networking events.
So there you go! From the way we welcome our new students and families, to how we support those leaving, and even how we prepare our Sixth Form students for smooth relocations after graduation – our Transition efforts truly shine on a global stage.
A huge thank you must go to everyone in our community who helps support those facing or preparing for upcoming relocations, and for always making our new families feel so welcome.
