The GIS Sixth Form Centre
With its tiered seating and lush greenery, the exterior of our newly-renovated Sixth Form Centre is now as beautiful as the interior!
Renovations on our Sixth Form Centre began in the summer of 2018 and Phase 1 was completed in August. Gone is the dark, cramped common room of previous years. A design team – comprising of architects, the school board and Mr Corbett – spent many hours brainstorming, drafting and refining designs for a modern, flexible space that would ensure Sixth Form students had an inspiring environment in which to study, collaborate and relax. Student feedback throughout the process helped shape the final designs – and the ultimate outcome.
With individual learning ‘pods’ as well as flexible breakaway spaces for small groups, as well as a large social area including kitchen, the Sixth Form Centre is conducive to great learning. In addition, offices for the Sixth Form Leadership Team – Ms Lindsay Round, Mr Michael Browning and Mr Adam Robinson, and Dr Wood – ensures that our Sixth Formers are able to have their support and guidance, whenever they need it. Comfortable seating areas, a kitchen and a pool table also ensures students can have some ‘down time’ when they need a break from study.
Our new Sixth Form Centre represents a significant investment in our Sixth Formers – and they deserve it. Year upon year their results impress, with a staggering 60 percent of A Level grades at A/A* and 96 percent of our students achieving their first or second choice of university worldwide.
We are proud that we now retain around 70 percent percent of our Year 11 students, who are choosing to stay at GIS for their Sixth Form years. While other international schools are struggling to retain students post-Year 11, our Sixth Form numbers are steadily growing as a result of the outstanding teaching and learning we offer, an array of enrichment opportunities (including our bespoke THRIVE internship programme) and now our beautiful Sixth Form Centre that truly reflects the quality of our Sixth Form programme.
