On Wednesday, June 21st, the Year 6 students of GIS took part in the F1 in Schools competition. This global interdisciplinary contest enabled the students to employ their skills in science, technology, engineering, and arts, mathematics (STEAM) to collaborate, design, analyze, manufacture, test, and ultimately race miniature cars powered by compressed air.
In its second year of being hosted at GIS, the Primary competition gathered more than 100 students, who raced their miniature cars on an F1 model track in front of visiting schools, parents, and staff. The atmosphere was electric as competing teams raced against each other, culminating in an edge-of-the-seat final race.
Beyond the excitement of the actual race day, the F1 in Schools competition offers a broader developmental experience. It equips students with business and marketing skills as they create brand identities, draft business plans, and develop marketing materials. This multifaceted approach also fosters teamwork, project management, presentation skills, and an entrepreneurial mindset.
Presently, GIS stands as the sole international primary school in Southeast Asia that provides such engaging and practical opportunities for its students. However, the growing interest from other schools underscores the potential for expansion beyond GIS.
