Garden International School recently hosted its first-ever TED-Ed Student Talk event. This officially licensed TED event was a fantastic opportunity for our secondary school students to shine, demonstrating their public speaking prowess and passion for various thought-provoking topics.
TED-Ed — TED’s youth and education initiative — aims to spark and celebrate the ideas and knowledge-sharing of teachers and students around the world. TED-Ed has grown from an idea worth spreading into an award-winning education platform that serves millions of teachers and students worldwide.
Our Students’ Voices in Focus
The TED-Ed Student Talks event highlighted the exceptional talent and dedication of our students. Each speaker captivated the audience with their insightful perspectives on a diverse range of subjects:
- “Why You Should Quit Smoking” by Jaehoon Lee
- “What We Can Learn from the History of Our Cities” by Adriana Zaman
- “The Arms Industry” by Lauren Yim
- “Why People Should Play Basketball” by Justin Choi
- “The Dokdo Dispute and Why the Government Should Solve It” by Yumin Kim
These talks not only reflected the students’ deep engagement with their topics but also their ability to convey complex ideas compellingly.
Student Leadership Shines
The event was a triumph of student leadership, spearheaded by three Year 12 Computer Science students: Catherine Wong, Eumelia Chew, and Yi Wen Lim. Their vision and dedication were instrumental in bringing this event to fruition. From planning to execution, their efforts ensured a seamless and impactful experience for all.
Catherine, Eumelia, and Yi Wen extended their sincere thanks Mr John Macleod, our Secondary English Teacher, who provided invaluable guidance as the speaking coach, helping students refine their presentations and build confidence. The multimedia support from our marketing department added a professional touch, enhancing the overall experience. A special mention goes to Mr James Abela, our Head of Computer Science & ICT, and a TED Speaker, whose mentorship and assistance in securing the TED Licence were crucial to the event’s success.
A Community United
The TED-Ed Student Talks event was a true reflection of the GIS community spirit. The event was filled with engaging conversations, intellectual curiosity, and a shared sense of achievement. It was a celebration of our students’ ability to articulate their thoughts and inspire others, reinforcing the supportive and collaborative environment at GIS.
